SF RED TRIUMPHS IN BACC’s MEMORIAL DAY VOLLEY BALL TOURNAMENT

As hot charcoal kept the heat on the barbecue grills, similarly San Francisco Red the defending champions, kept the heat on the volleyball courts, which was visibly consistent, as they clinched the annual Memorial Day Volleyball Tournament championship, for a second straight year with a perfect record.

This was the 4^th year of the tournament hosted by Bhutanese American Community Center (BACC), which was also sponsored by NAGC, Fortune Car Dealer, Ashok Gautam, Ghana Dawari and Anil Pradhan.

Overall in the tournament there were eight teams who battled it out to crown themselves the winners of this event.

The field of competitors this year consisted of the defending champions SF Red, SF Blue, Khotang, Sonoma A, Sonoma B, Bhutan, Santa Clara & Santa Rosa.

The tournament followed a round robin format, after which based on win-lose records the final four teams would be chosen to face off against each other, to get a step closer to glory.

As matches progressed, throughout the day, the teams collided in exciting match-ups, setting up a good run up till the finale.

This year Santa Clara and Santa Rosa were the two news teams who participated in the tournament this year. In particularly Santa Rosa’s team, which was fielded entirely of excited young adults, made their stay an exciting one, as they showed off their athletic ability, but which unfortunately was not enough to take them to the final four.

Bhutanese youths also filled the ranks of the team Bhutan, who were sloppy but tried their best on gaining some wins, even though it was not enough to guarantee their survival throughout the tournament.

If there was a surprise then it was Khotang who, were not in the form similar to last years (issues of injuries and missing team members), as they saw themselves knocked out of the tournament without making it tothe final four.

As the finals drew closer, and the field of teams shrunk to the final four, old rivalry spewed yet again as finalists of last year SF Red and SF Blue, once again met in the semis of this years tournament. Similarly players from Sonoma who were fielding two teams this year, A and B respectively, also faced each other in the semis which proved to be an exciting match up.

Losing their matches SF Blue and Sonoma B, played for third place, in which SF Blue took the third place trophy.

But at the end of the day SF Red and Sonoma A both winning their matches, made it to the grand finale. What at first looked like a close match of teams with equal strength, became far from being true, as SF Red, won the finale in straight set in the best of three sets, proving their mettle as the defending champs.

The event hosts also catered to the food needs of the players and other attendees, as volunteers were busy throughout the day, preparing food for them including daal, bhaat, chicken, pork etc.
