In Haiti, Aid Workers Prepare for the Long-term

(NewsUSA) – On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, quickly devastating the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Luckily, some relief organizations are already prepared, not only to provide immediate aid to Haiti, but also to rebuild communities and restore hope for as long as their help is needed.

For example, one humanitarian aid organization, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), has maintained a presence in Haiti for years. Its workers in Haiti are part of the community, so when they mobilize relief efforts, they’re helping to take care of their own. After other organizations have moved on to the next disaster, Lions will still be on the ground in Haiti, overseeing long-term reconstruction projects such as rebuilding homes and hospitals, developing human resource support and providing help for the disabled, including those disabled as a result of the earthquake.

Lions around the world are already working to support the Lions of Haiti. In the two weeks after the earthquake, Lions mobilized over $1 million to go towards relief efforts. LCIF is also creating three tent cities that will contain 200 tents, providing shelter for aid workers as well as Haitians who lost their homes in the earthquake.

As the conditions in Haiti stabilize, LCIF will shift its focus to long-term projects. Rebuilding Haiti means creating homes, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure.
